Among other things, including four gaping holes in my jaw where my wisdom teeth used to be (yay oral surgery) and loads of pain medication, I’ve been slowly gathering ideas for the tapestry idea I mentioned in this post.
I’ve got several quotes, some from Buffy, some from Firefly. Both are wonderful series, both are on Netflix, and I love the both of them so very much. Whedon is a great writer, and I wanted to create something with a quote from him, ultimately I decided against Dr Who because every worthwhile quote from him felt either overused (“wibbly wobbly timey wimey”) or was something really philosophical and deep and I didn’t really want something overtly preachy (which is how I’m afraid it would come across). I also decided against Sherlock, one of my other favorite series, because it’s so drenched in contextual jokes, and the quote would be out of context. I actually did run into that problem with Buffy and Firefly, because sometimes what made the quote funny was not the words but the performance from the actor. I digress. I have not yet started designing my piece, so if you disagree, or have a quote you think I must not have thought of, please share it! I may yet change my mind.
Anyway, I wanted to keep tabs on this project here- something I usually don’t do because even though most of my projects take quite a bit of time, I’m pants at taking process photos. This project, however, has so many facets, from conception to design, and the creation of the piece itself is going to be such a long process I may as well take process pics.
So in the interest of keeping tabs, here are the quotes I’m thinking of using, and why. I figure if I can justify it, I can keep it in consideration. If I can’t justify it, I don’t wanna immortalize it on a piece this intricate. (Format: Quote, Character, Season.Episode)
First, from Firefly:
“We have done the impossible, and that makes us mighty.”- Capt’n Malcolm Reynolds 1.1
I love this quote. I’m afraid it may be a bit short for this particular project but it has a whole bunch of power behind it so it’s still in the running.
“Sanguine”. Hopeful. Plus, point of interest: it also means “bloody”.-Zoe Washburn “Well, that pretty much covers all the options, don’t it?”-Capt’n Malcolm Reynolds 1.5
I like this quote too, for the wordplay, and for the character conveyed in the quote. I do love Mal. I’m not sure this’ll make the final cut, or my next round of cuts, but it might, so for now it stays. It’s about the length I’m looking for too, so that’s a plus.
“First rule of battle, little one… don’t ever let them know where you are.”-Zoe WHOO-HOO! I’M RIGHT HERE! I’M RIGHT HERE! YOU WANT SOME O’ ME?! YEAH YOU DO! COME ON! COME ON! AAAAAH!”-Mal “‘Course, there’re other schools of thought.”-Zoe “They don’t like it when you shoot at ‘em. I worked that out myself.”- Mal 1.12
As a dialogue, this one would be fun. I could work out a design with varying sizes and shapes for the letters which would convey the emotion behind it, as well as playing with color to get the right feeling across, which would be fun. I’m not certain about it, as it’s not particularly philosophical or meaningful in any way, but it’s one of my favorite moments and somehow I wouldn’t mind immortalizing it anyway. It might be a bit too long, but that might be the caps lock talking.
“When you can’t run anymore, you crawl, and when you can’t do that, well… Yeah, you know the rest. When you can’t run, you crawl. And when you can’t crawl, when you can’t do that …you find someone to carry you.” -Tracey 1.12
I like this one. Zoe technically ends the quote but I don’t think I would choose to attribute it to any character, just the show, and the episode name (The Message) because Tracey isn’t a major character and frankly I don’t like him
very much at all. It’s a good quote about life, as well as being a mirror into the way that Mal and Zoe have changed through the war ect… It’s all significant on several levels and I like that. I don’t really like that it’s not a message of self reliance, or that it’s so sad, but I think I could let that slide.
“Know what the first rule of flying is?… Love. Can know all the math in the ‘verse but take a boat in the air that you don’t love? She’ll shake you off just as sure as a turn in the worlds. Love keeps her in the air when she oughtta fall down…tell you she’s hurtin’ ‘fore she keens…makes her a home.”- Mal Serenity
This one’s from the movie, at the very end. Mal says this to River. It’s very poignant but It’s a stretch to apply it to anything not the show. I mean, it’s philosophical and all but… I dunno. I don’t like it as much as I do some of the others, so it likely won’t end up making the cut.
“Shiny, Let’s be bad guys.”- Jayne Cobb Serenity
Even though it’s short, this quote embodies the series so perfectly, I can’t not consider it. I would likely try to tack it onto the end of a longer quote, or maybe find a shorter one from the series that I like, so it’s still on the table.
“I laugh in the face of danger! Then I hide until it goes away.”-Xander Harris 1.3
I love this quote. I love Xander. I wish it weren’t so short, and that he would make more jokes like this that weren’t so mired in context that they lose all meaning when you pull them out for a project like this.
“Yes, it’s terribly simple. The good guys are always stalwart and true, the bad guys are easily distinguished by their pointy horns or black hats, and, uh, we always defeat them and save the day. No one ever dies, and everybody lives happily ever after.”- Rupert Giles “Liar.”-Buffy Summers 2.7
This quote is in the lead actually. It’s cut from the full version, which I think is too long, although thinking about it now, especially in context of the other dialogue I had from Firefly up there, I could maybe fit the full thing:
Buffy: “Does it ever get easy?”
Giles: “You mean life?”
Buffy: “Yeah. Does it get easy?”
Giles: “What do you want me to say?”
Buffy: “Lie to me.”
Giles: “Yes, it’s terribly simple. The good guys are always stalwart and true, the bad guys are easily distinguished by their pointy horns or black hats, and, uh, we always defeat them and save the day. No one ever dies, and everybody lives happily ever after.”
I love how telling it is of where Giles is in relation to Buffy’s struggle, and where she is in accepting her life. Buffy’s problems are clearly much bigger than mine ever will be, unless I am someday called upon to save the world, which I doubt will ever be the case, but I still think it’s really applicable, and deserves to be the focus of such a big project. I would likely do some overlay of words and color stuff in order to do the whole thing, but I can’t say for sure until I decide to design it.
So that’s what I’m thinking. If you guys think of other quotes, let me know! If you like one of these more than the others, let me know! I love input!
